Pencil Drawing – Process

Not sure if this is of interest to many people… but someone asked me how I create my pencil drawings, so I thought I’d do a post that shows some of the process. This isn’t a tutorial – heck, I don’t even know if this is the “correct” way to do a drawing – it’s just how my warped little brain works. 🙂

The above photo is the rough linework, used to map out the composition and make sure the proportions are correct. I’ve learned the hard way that this is the most important stage, and if I get this in decent shape the rest of the drawing goes much more smoothly.

The next step is to start thinking in terms of planes, rather than lines: I very roughly decide where the highlights are first. It looks like hell, usually. 🙂

Still looks like a mess: determining where some of the shadows go, and how the fabric of their sleeves will look. Also, at this stage I try to balance out color usage: the rust colors and lavender colors are used in both their hands, as are the cream and beige colors of the highlights

This is the part of the process where I pick a starting point for the details: in this case, Killian’s hand. I think in terms of relative size/distance, etc., so I need to sort of put my stake in the ground somewhere. Then I can adjust Emma’s hand if I need to.

Details of Emma’s hand are put in, and more detail added to the chain and her sleeve.

The finished product: I added depth in the shadows (for example, the area where the bottom of Emma’s hand meets her sleeve), blended colors a little, added some more lavender, and many other small things to make it “pop.”

I hope this was (somewhat?) interesting! I personally love to see artists’ processes, but I’m kind of an art geek. 🙂

Original post of the finished product is here, along with links to all of the drawings in my “Love in Details” series.
