“Hey,” he said gently. He still didn’t know how to operate in her orbit; it wasn’t exactly intuitive, knowing how to act around the woman you accidentally left in “a delicate condition,” as they used to say.
Plus, Emma Swan didn’t exactly make it easy. He’d been rather shocked to find her banging on his door three months after their encounter. The corner of his mouth quirked up as he remembered it.
“Do you remember when you told me you were pregnant?”
“Ugh,” Emma said, rubbing a low spot on her very large, very lovely abdomen. He wanted to reach out and rub it for her, but she was very skittish about his touch these days. “You should have stopped me from the spicy garlic pickle chips with that third grilled cheese.”
“Me and what army, Swan?” he chuckled. He handed her his glass, the ice cubes tinkling invitingly as he passed it over. She took it, murmuring her thanks, but the way her eyes sparkled over the rim as she sipped at the water were more than her often sparse sentiments could convey.
There was a moment of silence–this one comfortable, unlike so many of their other moments over the past five months–and when Killian broke it, his words seemed nearly out of place.
