She saw love in his eyes.

Never had she seen such a thing. Well, not directed at her. Yet she recognized it, all the same. She saw it every day whenever her parents greeted one another. She would never have been able to describe it before, had she been asked; it was simply a feeling she got–a deep-seated longing, watching two who loved as deeply as did Snow White and David gaze at each other as though it were the first time. It was both sweet and wistful, and to a lesser degree the same way she felt when one of her parents looked upon her.

But the way this man was looking at her, she felt loved. It was the most curious and astonishing and confusing thing she’d ever experienced.

And not entirely unwelcome.
