Hook’s is based on Liam’s navy coat (to honour his brother and symbolise honour, and a little reference to royalty), but in his signature black-and-red, and the pirate vest and shirt. So it symbolises a combination of various elements from his past which made him what he is today, still a man of honour despite his piracy. For Emma’s dress I wanted something simple and comfortable, nothing overly tight or complicated or sexy, just Emma. I borrowed the sleeves from Elizabeth Swann’s wedding dress as a little pirate shout-out, and added the feathers on her shoulders like on the dress she wore in Charming’s dream, as a reference to Snow’s wedding dress and also Emma’s surname which turned out to symbolise her hope and determination.
So basically I tried to give them outfits that incorporate and honour their pasts while also being something new, sort of tying together everything they are now.
